About Karen Sperling

Karen Sperling is a California-based artist who is originally from New York.

Her mother was an artist, and Karen has been drawing and painting since childhood. Her eclectic art ranges from figurative portraits and landscapes to abstract fine art. She has a BA from Ithaca College, where she majored in English and minored in art. In addition to life drawing and painting classes, Karen studied art history, including the Renaissance, and had the privilege of viewing in person the artwork she learned about in Florence and Rome during her junior year abroad as a student living in London.

Karen Sperling paints original acrylics or oil portraits by hand on canvas based either on a source photo that you provide or a photo that she takes for you at no extra charge.

Karen Sperling also paints mixed media portraits brushstroke by brushstroke by hand on the computer using Corel Painter software and a Wacom stylus, creating a beautiful original portrait using modern-day cutting edge paint brushes. Karen is highly respected as the preeminent Painter expert, having written the original Painter software manuals and four published Painter books. The mixed media painting is then printed to gallery wrapped canvas and is a stunning keepsake original work of art either as is or with additional acrylic and oil that Karen paints by hand on top of the canvas print, adding depth, texture and value to the painting. Karen paints the digital portrait from either a source photo that you provide or a photo that she takes for you at no extra charge, whichever you prefer.

Karen is also a life-long photographer.

Karen has exhibited her art in New York's prestigious Chelsea art district, in Los Angeles and during Art Basel Miami, the country's biggest and most influential art event.

Her portraits and paintings are held in private collections around the world. She is based in Sherman Oaks, CA, convenient to southern California locations including Hidden Hills, Laguna Beach, Seal Beach, San Clemente, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Calabasas, Palos Verdes Estates, Oceanside, Rancho Cucamonga, Rolling Hills, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades, Huntington Beach, Santa Clarita, Malibu, Torrance, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Montecito, Ojai, Santa Barbara, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Encino, Hollywood, Studio City, Woodland Hills, Gendale and Ventura.

Contemporary Relevance
Karen Sperling's abstract art, by balancing between
representational and non-representational,
reinvents the traditional sensibilities of abstract
art, giving it a contemporary relevance.

Powerful, Gorgeous, Complex Abstracts
I LOVE your abstracts! They're powerful, gorgeous, complex.
They twist, go involuted, then shout!
Emotion, intellect, passion, revelation, transformation...
I see all these things in your abstracts.
Viewing your work makes me feel privileged to have
glimpsed into your soul--VERY few artists in my life
have evoked this kind of reaction from me.
Your art is like an urgent embrace, or a near-death
experience, wherein one receives a vision that can
transform, and also takes a while to process.
Wonderful work!

Inspirational Art
I love your work. Everything happens for a reason,
and walking into the gallery at Art Basel gave me an
opportunity to see your work, which was a breath of
fresh air and inspiration.
I am very interested in your art. I respect you as
an artist and the work that you do and would love to
have this piece.
