Digital photo enhancement has revolutionized the way we perceive and interact with images, offering endless creative possibilities. From the mesmerizing landscapes that fill our social media feeds to the intricate details captured in portraits, digital photography offers endless creativity.
But digitally enhancing photos is only a first step.
Today it's possible to take that creativity a step further by digitally turning photos into painted works of art.
By transforming photos into stunning paintings using Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter, we can explore new artistic expressions and push the boundaries of our imagination. In this article, we will delve into the creative potential of turning photos into paintings, using Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter.
Painting Meaning Painting, Not Applying Special Effects or A.I.
I have heard the argument that painting on the computer isn't painting because you aren't using real paint.
However, I use the word painting to describe the hand/eye coordination of creating brushstrokes by hand using a stylus. And in my view, the skill and talent it takes to use a paintbrush to add oils to a canvas, for instance, is the same as the skill and talent it takes to paint brushstrokes with a stylus.
The Importance of the Right Tools
When it comes to transforming photos into paintings, having the right software for digital photo enhancement is crucial. Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter are two of the most powerful options available, catering to both beginners and professionals.
Adobe Photoshop: Known for its extensive image editing features, Photoshop allows users to edit photos with precision. And Photoshop is also useful for painting, including adding brushstrokes and blending, thanks to the Mixer Brush Tool.
Corel Painter: Painter is the gold standard when it comes to digital painting, providing a diverse array of brushes, textures and tools that come very close to traditional art mediums. It’s perfect for artists looking to create authentic-looking paintings. In fact, very early on, around 2003, my Painter paintings were included in a gallery show of digital art and some visitors questioned what my paintings were doing there because they thought they looked like traditional art.

Choosing between Painter and Photoshop often depends on your specific needs and familiarity with each platform. Many artists find it beneficial to master both programs.
In general, Photoshop is the leader when it comes to image editing like color correction and selecting and it's hard to do without it.
Painter excels with painting, but if you would prefer to stick with one program, you can do fine with Photoshop because it has both painting and image editing tools. What is more difficult is not having Photoshop and relying on Painter for image editing, though there are workarounds in Painter so it wouldn't be impossible.
Learning the Art of Digital Painting
Art History and Theories
Many photographers and hobbyists who would like to paint based on photos never attended art classes. So they figure they can just use what's in the photo for the painting. But to create stunning digital paintings, it’s essential to catch up on art history and theories that have guided artists for centuries, enhancing your skills in digital painting techniques..
Art History: Knowing the characteristics of various art movements like Renaissance art, Impressionism, Surrealism, and Expressionism and artists like Rembrandt, Sargent and Cézanne can help you choose your style and enrich your digital artwork.
Color Theory: Applying traditional color theories like complementary colors, color harmony, and value contrast to digital paintings can enhance the mood and emotion of your artwork.
Learning these foundational elements not only elevates your creations, but also sets you apart as a knowledgeable artist in the digital space.
What Makes a Painting a Painting
To successfully transform a photo into a painting, it’s important to understand the nuances that differentiate a painting from a photograph, ensuring your digital painting stands out.
The software companies would have you believe that all you have to do is add brushstrokes to a photo and voilá you have a work of art.
It's a little more complicated than that and I teach in all my classes what makes a painting a painting and not just a photo with brushstrokes.

Selecting Photos for Painting
Not all photos are suitable for transformation into digital paintings. Selecting the right photos is key to successful photo to painting transformation. Here are a few tips on selecting the right images for your digital painting projects:
Strong Composition: Look for photos with strong contrast. Images that have a clear subject and an interesting background often make for better paintings.
Clear Photos: It's easier to paint based on clear photos than blurry ones.
Personal Connection: Choose images that resonate with you personally. When you are passionate about the subject, it shines through in your work.
By carefully selecting your photos, you can make the painting process more enjoyable and meaningful. We cover in depth what makes a photo a good candidate to turn into a painting in my classes and we can go over your photos in the monthly feedback webinar.
Creative Applications of Digital Paintings
For Photographers
Photographers can benefit greatly from digitally enhancing their work. One lucrative option is to sell commissioned paintings based on their photos to clients. This not only diversifies their income, but also deepens the client relationship by offering personalized art.
Paintings based on photos for clients aren't limited to portraits, either.
Imagine a client requesting a unique painting of their favorite vacation spot. By transforming the original photo into a painting, photographers can provide a one-of-a-kind art piece that holds sentimental value.
And of course, a big market for paintings based on photos is pet portraits. Clients love paintings based on photos of their pets, both the ones that are still with them and the ones that sadly aren't.

For Hobbyists
Hobbyists can discover new ways to create art based on meaningful memories. Whether it’s paintings of kids, grandkids, or travel adventures, turning cherished photos into digital paintings offers a delightful way to celebrate these moments.
Consider taking a snapshot from a family vacation and turning it into a colorful painting that captures the joy of the experience. You can gift these creations to family members or hang them on your walls as personal art.
For Artists and Photographers
For artists and photographers looking to monetize their work, the digital painting market offers various avenues. Selling paintings online through personal websites or third-party platforms allows creators to reach a wider audience.
Additionally, showing paintings at art fairs and other in-person venues can open new doors for sales. Here you can showcase your ability to transform photos into stunning pieces of art, attracting clients who appreciate unique works.
